Learning from those ‘How did I get here?’ moments

You've had those moments, right? When you see your life with new, and sometimes painful, clarity and wonder, 'Is this what I really want?' and 'Did I really choose this path?'

My moments

I was in my early twenties, sitting in a spa with a cousin, drinking champagne (as we often did in those days), wondering how I ended up in such an unhappy marriage. My husband and I would go out and not come home together, and I had stopped caring when he walked in the door. I knew it was time for change. Fast forward several years. I was in the shower after a full day of work and a heavy workout. I'd been trying to fall pregnant for months, had raging PMT, and felt like my head was about to burst. My one thought was, 'This is not where I want to be.' Time for more changes.

Is your life 'on track'?

It's so seductively easy to allow our lives to roll, unquestioningly, along the generally accepted path: school, some kind of further study, then a career. And amongst this we weave travel, friendships, relationships, children and home-making. Of course, all these life stages and achievements can give us great joy and satisfaction. But when we live 'unquestioningly', we risk missing out on so much. Like acknowledging what's working and what's not. Like discovering what's really important to us. Like being truly, deeply excited to begin each day of the life we are creating.

Making time for reflection

Creating a space for reflection, every day or every week, is so incredibly powerful and empowering. I resist the urge to fill up my reflection time with more to-dos, or sleeping, or TV. Instead I sit quietly with a few of the following questions and listen to what comes up, without judgement.

  • What do I want my life to be about?
  • What is important to me?
  • What do I dream about?
  • What is missing in my life and what do I want more of?
  • What do I want to fill my life with?

What about you? I'd love to hear about your 'How did I get here?' moments. How did you move on from them? As always, the comments are open for more savvy conversation!
