How To Create Your Own Dream Board

Dream boards are a powerful tool to explore where you are and where you want to go in your life. Wherever you are in your journey, and whatever aspect of your life you are working on, a dream board engages your creative, intuitive abilities to reveal what’s truly important to you right now – you may be surprised by the results! Displaying your completed dream board also provides daily inspiration and motivation to keep moving towards your goals. So, are you ready to create your own dream board?

STEP 1: Write your wish list

What do you wish for? What do you do that is truly blissful? How often do you give yourself permission to wish for things (without censoring)? Allow yourself to write down whatever is important to you – what you need and what you desire. You can come back to your list over several days as new ideas occur to you. Be creative and expansive. There are no limits! Imagine your future: 1 year, 2 years, 5 years and 10 years. What are you doing? Who are you spending time with? Where are you living? How are you feeling? How are you earning your money (if you are)? What are you celebrating? What are you responsible for?

STEP 2: Group your wishes

Group your wishes into themes (health, financial, relationships, family etc).

STEP 3: Get creative!

It’s time to start creating your dream board. Here are some quick tips to remember:

  • For now, simply focus on the end result – what you want your life to look like – don’t get hung up on every detail or worry about how you will get there.
  • This is definitely not about creating a work of art, so don’t be too concerned about how you make it or whether it’s ‘beautiful’ enough. You can make a collage from magazine pictures, photographs or crafting materials. You can also draw a simple mind map with brown paper and felt pens.
  • Above all, be open-minded. If something appeals, even if it’s not on your wish list, add it and see what it might reveal.

COLLAGE

Your dream board can be as intricate or as simple as you desire. You could begin with a fabric covered pin board, a magnetic board, cardboard or a large sheet of paper. Gather magazines, photos and mementos (this can also be done electronically if you wish). Make sure you cover a variety of topics including money/wealth, career, sport, adventure, health, cooking, spirituality/philosophy, fitness, fashion, travel etc. Referring to your list of wishes, work through the collection selecting images that appeal. These maybe images of a happy family, or laughing with friends, it might be an exotic destination, or a designer home. Follow your instinct. Group your selected images under the themes you identified and use glue / pins / magnets to arrange them on your chosen backing. If you’ve discovered a new theme in the course of your search don’t worry, just add it to your wish list. Take as much time as you need to create your dream board – it doesn’t have to be completed in one sitting – so don’t make it a chore. Have fun!

MIND MAP

For an even easier approach simply use a large piece of paper and felt pens (incorporate a few different colours for some variety). Draw images that represent items from your wish list, grouped in the themes you identified. Feel free to use lettering or shapes or basic diagrams. You don’t need to worry about being ‘artistic’ or exact, just let the images flow from your imagination.

STEP 4: Time for reflection…

When your dream board is complete it’s time to reflect on what you have created. Take a piece of paper and a pen and answer the following questions, using no more than 5 – 7 words.

  • What achievements are most important to you?
  • How would it feel to realise all the goals you have captured on your dream board?
  • How would you describe your life now?
  • What’s different between the life you have now, and the life you have created on your dream board?

Don’t stop with one! Use this dream board exercise again and again to gain clarity on your current circumstances, refocus on your goals, and inspire yourself to keep moving forward. You can create your dream board alone, with your partner and family, or gather a group of friends together. When it comes to sharing your dream board with others, you may choose to tell only one or two people, display it in your office or kitchen where others can see and comment, or use an electronic version as your screen saver. Most of all, make sure you enjoy the process.
