Living savvy is not about making unsustainable life changes or fixing anything broken.  Instead it is about the small things that we can do to live the life that we want.

In our busy lives we can sometimes overlook the things right in front of us that we can do that make our day special.   This is what fine tuning the ordinary to live extraordinary is all about….the simple things we can do to make life sparkle brighter.

What are the simple things we can do ……Lets get the list started …

Shower by candle light

Drink your tea or coffee out of a special cup or mug.  I love drinking my first and last tea of the day out of a big mug that keeps the tea really hot.

Drink champagne out of champagne flutes

Have someone else make you one cup of tea or coffee a day.  My fella makes me my last cup of tea of the night..a lovely ritual after I have taken care of everyone else all day this is my time to be looked after.

What simple things are special to you?

Lets share our ideas and grow our list together.

Hi Jo,

Love your suggestions.  I have a special tea mug and can fully relate to this!  I have a couple of thoughts to share.

Read a book for pleasure.   Not a magazine or a paper, a book.  Make the time to catch up with an author you love, or find a new one to enjoy.

Wake up fifteen minutes earlier, and use that time to make breakfast as leisurely a meal as you can.

Before you go to sleep, find one thing in the day that brought you pleasure, no matter how small it was.

Make an effort to look check out the night sky.  Check out the phase of the moon, look for constellations, try and count the stars.

Just a few thoughts to start off with.  I want to think about this some more.  It is in these fine details that some of life's true joys can be found.

Stas,

What wonderful yet simple things we can do to add that extra sparkle to our day…in keeping with the theme of sparkle, I will take the time to look at the night sky tonight and notice the moon and the stars…(I will take my children with me on their way to bed.)

thank you for joining in our conversation.

Finished listening to podcast of Heath Ducker conversation with Richard Fidler .http://www.abc.net.au/local/st…..613781.htm  In the conversation he spoke about growing up with love but in poverty …he mentioned the the simple things he discovered that felt special to him.

  • Clean sheets on the bed
  • Your own pillow in a fresh pillowslip

As a youngster I was fiercely protective pf my pillow (very tricky when you are camping with 4 siblings).  Have let that go now that I have my children jumping into bed and tossing pillows around all in the name of a having a good time!  I still look forward to the nights that I get into my bed that has been freshly made with clean smelling sheets.

I *love* the feel of fresh, quality cotton sheets on the bed. Beautiful, heavy count, white sheets just off the clothesline – heaven :)

More simple things I love:

  • having a small bunch of fresh flowers on my desk
  • massaging my arms/hands, legs/feet with a scented moisturiser – ginger & lime at the moment
  • oil burners with my favourite oils – rose, lavendar, orange (hmm… didn't realise how much of a 'smell' person I was!)
  • lying in a park or by the river, watching the clouds go by

I agree with many of Jo and Rebecca's -

  • clean fresh sheets
  • lovely oils in the burner
  • an essential oil massage straight after the shower

And I also like

  • my morning coffee at one of my favourite local coffee haunts
  • sitting at the beach watching the ocean

now, having written these down, maybe I'll undertake some…. how easy is it to put on some oils…. ?

Some fabulous ideas so far…..

I also love…

…picking fresh herbs from the garden

…a bath with rose petals (I used to live in a place with a rose garden, I could take big handfuls of rose petals and float them on top of the water – the smell was devine)

…if no rose petals available, essential oils are also great, I like to add some apricot oil so that when you get out your skin is smooth and soft

…an afternoon nap

…reading a novel under a shady tree where you can smell the earth and the grass

…writing a real letter, with a real pen, on real paper

Our list is growing…..thank you

As I was reading this list I heard myself letting out little ahhh yes….to the simple things like the rose petals in the grass and the burinig of essentail oils or fragent candles.  Whenever I do the latter I think how simple it a thing it is to do while enjoying the fragrence (like you Rebecca, I am a smell person)

I am going to lie in the park and watch the clouds go by with kids in the school holidays….I am starting a list of simple things I can enjoy with the little ones (for at least a moment until their attention becomes focused on something else)

My simple pleasures are;

  • Fresh flowers in the house – the brighter the better
  • Wearing matching lingerie makes me feel special
  • Freshly painted toenails
  • I love being outdoors at sundown when there is a warm summer breeze, preferably with wine in hand and great company.

Fresh flowers are wonderful.

Especially if they have a perfume (if my nose is happy, I am happy).  I dream of a garden (cared for by someone with a greener thumb then mine) where I can pick flowers from my own garden.  At the moment I feel satisifed when I pick my own lavender and scented geranium…it is a start!!

thank you Julia.

I was reading my newsletter from Charlie Gilkey at http://www.productiveflourishing.com earlier this week and some of his ideas and suggestions fitted so well with the concept of the simple things we can do in life I wanted to share them with you.

  • If you're tired and need a break – Stretching, breathing, drinking some water, or just closing your eyes for five or ten minutes may work.
  •  Need some quiet time? Ask your family for some space and let them know that it's not because of them.
  •  Feel disconnected to your loved ones? Ask for a hug or ask them to sit and talk with you for five or ten minutes.

There are some great ideas here.

My simple pleasures are….

  • Laying in my hammock and reading a good book
  • My morning shower – it's about the only time of the day I am completely by myself. It gives me time to plan my day and do my best thinking.
  • Savouring the taste of a really good piece of chocolate
  • Afternoon naps on the weekend
  • The hug I get from my hubby everynight when he gets home from work

Thank you Kay, for reminding us about the value of the simple things.

I love my shower for reflection and will use that time for some quiet meditation or washing my troubles away.  Must share that since water restructions have become tighter, I try to be more aware of time spent enjoying the cleansing feel of the water.

My lovely friend Kay told me on the weekend that she went to the market and bought some lettuce and came home and planted it.  I decided to add to the fine tuning list

Planting something edible that you can grow and enjoy the fresh taste at "harvest" time

What this reminded me (as I wait for our vege patch to be built, like everything at home that Andrew takes on,will have an impressive design feature) is that you can……

start your vegetable and herb garden one plant at a time!

My recent blog the glamorous art of toilet cleaning got us thinking…how do you make the mundane fun?  Well there were some great ideas posted.  I decided to take a summary and include them in our list of 101 ideas to fine tune the ordinary.  Here they are

Change the alarm and ringtone on phone to something that makes you smile, rather than grimace, when they go off.

Light an oil-burner or incense stick while working at the desk

Work from home – put on nice clothes and accessories and make-up – so can feel good while doing the every-day things.

Work from home – Enjoy the freedom and wear your cossies so on a hot summers day you can cool off in the pool

To make cooking fun – wear an apron, you can have them custom made printed with your own photo or wear one that makes you feel like a domestic goddess

Put on some of your favourite music to put a bounce in your step as you complete the most mundane of tasks

I was just re reading this fantastic list that is steadily growing and saw your comment on me buying the lettuce seedlings and planting them. Thought I would give you an unpdate.

Last night I went out to our vegie garden with the kids and harvested one of the lettuces. It was a lovely feeling to pick something that had been watered and nurtered to a full grown plant. I'm sure it tasted better because it was home grown. We also stopped and picked some strawberries.

Watching the realisation sink in to my 3 year old son that this was something in the garden that we had grown was beautiful. He was so pleased and ate 3 times as much as he usually would.

Also on the subject of vegies, I was reading the new mag Prevention over the weekend and found some ordinary things that will make an extraordinary impact. Thought I would share them here…

Get 20% of my daily vitamin A needs by adding 3 baby spinach leaves to my lunchtime sandwich. (good for my eyesight)

½ cupped chopped red acpsicum to my scrambled eggs and I have all my vitamin C needs for the day (great news for the skin)

Sprigs of parsley to my salad or pasta and I have all my vitamin K for the day (great for bone density)

I read that article too and had the same thought – baby spinach was added to my breakfast scrambled eggs and capsicum to my fruit and vege platter in the evening!  So easy!
