Hi

I am getting more philosophical about where I work, what I do and the people I come across in life as I get older.

Mainly, I notice the "ugly" characteristics of people at work. Some people get jealous, just because I went on holidays and they did not, some people think their job is more important than anyone else's, some people are so protective of their knowledge they don't want to share – the list can go on and on….

Although I see the "good" characteristics of people as well, "ugly" overshadows this.

What can I do to build trust, understanding and team spirit here?

At times it can be easier to have our energy absorbed by the people who zap our energy in so many ways, what is that saying the squeaky wheel gets the oil.  When I am coaching team leaders or managers who often come tome to talk about the problem people I get them to shift their attention and focus to the people that are the performers in the team (these are usually in the majority – you know the 80/20 rule…give most of your attention to the people who are performing and great to be around – you feel better and the team spirit improves).

I once worked with a person that from the first day we clashed it was difficult to work together.  He left for 12 months of study and on the day he returned I felt my stomach sink as he walked back into work.  I remember thinking we can go back to how it was or I can do something different and start again.  I got up from my desk, left my office, put a smile on my face and walked up to him and said "welcome back" …we built a fabulous working relationship and friendship in the time that we worked together.

Many times in life we can't change others but we can change our approach.

What can you change?
