Champagne Friday #51

A weekly tradition where we pop the cork on the week that was, celebrate what worked, reflect on what didn’t, and look forward to a sparkling new week of possibility. I hope you’ll join me and share your reflections in the comments.

A very subdued Champagne Friday this week to reflect the week that has been with the devastation of the floods in Queensland.  In fact it is almost lunch time on Friday and I am only writing the post now.   We live on the north side of Brisbane where now since the rain has stopped, unless you turned on the news or visited the supermarket with rapidly emptying shelves it is difficult to imagine that close by people, including friends and work mates have lost everything and the city off Brisbane has almost come to a stand still.  My family & I feel very grateful that our home and business (which was close to the Brisbane river at Redbank has remained untouched) our thoughts go out to those whose homes and businesses were not spared.  I have included a photo of a hundred year old church we have been renovating.  The church sits about 16 – 17 metres above the banks of the Bremmer River in Ipswich.  We don’t know yet if by the virtue of good luck the water has entered the building, but any damage we sustained is nothing compared to the home of the family that lived next door (on the far right of the photo you can see the edge of the roof, which was the only part of the house that remained visible).

What am I celebrating?

This week I am recognising the community spirit and determination shown by Queensland and beyond.

What am I acknowledging?

The many phone calls, messages and emails from friends and family checking in on us in the past week.  It is wonderful to be surrounded by their love and caring thoughts.

That amongst the devastation of such colossal magnitude, that I this week could not rise above petty and ordinary everyday issues that were upsetting my apple cart.  I would like to believe that I was a person that could rise above these issues in the face of the personal and community destruction that others have faced ….but this week, I was not this person.  Instead I was short tempered, intolerant and focused on details that in the scheme of things did not rate the importance I was putting on them.

What was missing?

Nothing of any real significance.

What small change can I make for next week?

To continue to get back into the swing of my regular routine with the tweaks that are required in the last week of the school holidays.  After almost 8 weeks together, I am looking forward to the children returning to school (I was not cut out to be a stay at home mother).
