The comparing game and why it sucks

comparing

Comparing and ‘shoulds’ seem to go hand-in-hand. When we put our attention on someone else’s extraordinary, we can quickly find ourselves chasing an ideal that’s hard to live up to… And that’s when the ‘shoulds’ start to pile up.

Can you really reinvent who you are?

ladygaga

A few months back I stood beside my Miss 7 as Miley Cyrus burst on stage in a raunchy black leather outfit of knee-high boots, suspender-like stockings, hot pants and sequinned bra. This was a young woman determined to leave the Hannah Montana Disney image behind, and she’s not the first to attempt such a reinvention. But can we really reinvent who we are?

Lessons from a Showgirl: Be the person you want to become

showgirl

I’m always a sucker for a story that involves a girl chasing her dreams. Throw in sequins and feathers and Memoirs of a Showgirl by my hometown girl Shay Stafford had me hooked. One of my big takeaways was the courage it took for Shay to take the final step into her dream life… and how sequins and feathers may just help all of us get a little closer to our dreams.

Do ‘nice girls’ put others first?

nicegirl

I think that the phrase ‘be nice’ is too often used, especially with girls and women, to mean ‘be agreeable, pleasant and conciliatory’ at the cost of our own beliefs or preferences. It encourages us to say ‘yes’ when we want to say ‘no’.

Me and My Huge Handbag: A Trial Separation

inmybag

I have an enormous handbag. I call it my Tardis, or Mary Poppins bag, because all manner of things (laptop, shoes, drinks and snacks), things which should not, by rights, be able to fit into a shoulder handbag, can be pulled from its depths with a flourish. It prompts gasp of appreciation from female friends and colleagues, “Wow, I really like your bag”.
And I’m breaking up with it.
